It's kind of a weird conglomeration of stuff, particularly that Kings of Leon song. They played "Charmer" when they played Pop's last year and it had the same weird yelping stuff on it. Don't know how I forgot this point, but it certainly surprised me when I started playing it. That Waking Ashland CD is pretty good....kind of like Ben Folds without the snarky sense of humor.

Kings of Leon "Charmer" Because of the Times
Waking Ashland "Salt Lake Jam" The Well
Elk City "Cherries in the Snow" New Believers
The Finches "Step Outside" Human Like a House
Ola Podrida "Cindy" Ola Podrida

Download the E show, part 1. I wasn't sure if I'd split the E's in half or not, but I decided I'd go for it in order to play some bands I probably wouldn't ever play otherwise. Turned out to be a VERY good decision. The songs by Eames Era (who I had never heard before) and Eisley fit very well into the set, and I got to get a little crazy by slipping in "Gay Bar." Everyone should download this set if for no other reason than Electronic's downright AMAZING song "For You" (Electronic features Bernard Sumner, the singer of New Order, and Johnny Marr, the guitar player of the Smiths, so obviously you should like it or you have no taste). I was tempted to play a couple more ELO songs ("So Fine" and "Evil Woman," for those who were wondering) but decided to give some new bands (Ela, the Eaves) a try. Glad I did.

Edwards, Jonathan "Sunshine" Jonathan Edwards
Eames Era, The "Fake Do-Gooders" Heroes + Sheroes
Earlimart "Burning the Cow" Everyone Down Here
Elf Power "Walking With the Beggar Boys" Walking With the Beggar Boys
Echobrain "Colder World" Echobrain
Elastica "Connection" Elastica
Electric Six "Gay Bar" Fire
Eagles of Death Metal "I Want You So Hard (Boy's Bad News)" Death By Sexy
Electric Light Orchestra "Do Ya" A New World Record
Echo & The Bunnymen "Lips Like Sugar" Echo & The Bunnymen
Electronic "For You" Raise the Pressure
Eels "Saturday Morning" Shootenanny!
Eisley "Golly Sandra" Room Noises
Ela "Professional Love" Real Blood on Fake Trees
Eaves, The "Summer Gold" The Eaves
Edwards, Jonathan "Shanty" Jonathan Edwards

D-Day, Part 2

Hey y'all, here's the radio show alluded to last night.

Click here to download the new release portion of the show. The setlist...

Cibo Matto "Sugar Water" Pom Pom: The Essential Cibo Matto
Modest Mouse "Dashboard" We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
Arctic Monkeys "What If You Were Right the First Time?" I just wasn't planning ahead, is all. Anyway, it's time for another radio show to download, or, more accurately, THREE radio shows! How, you say?

Well, I started off doing the typical half-hour new release showcase, all songs making their FU:EL debut....

Modest Mouse "Dashboard" We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
!!! When I was originally thinking about the show, I was sure I'd only do one hour's worth of D's, but as I went through my collection I realized I could very easily do 2 hours, and I bulked up the setlist with a batch of stuff from the KWUR stacks. I'm halfway tempted to expand all but the most paltry letters (Q, X, Y, Z) into 2 hours' worth of shows just so that I expand outside of my own CD collection as much as possible. 19 D songs this week, 6 of which came from outside of my collection. Anything requests for Dm-Dz let me know! There's at least one really good shocker in there toward the end....

Dale, Dick and the Del-Tones "Miserlou" Music From the Motion Picture Pulp Fiction
Deathray Davies "Maggie Doesn't Blink" Midnight at the Black Nail Polish Factory
Darker My Love "What's a Man's Paris" Darker My Live
Dinosaur Jr. "Feel The Pain" Without A Sound
Division of Laura Lee "We've Been Planning This For Years" Black City
Dirty Pretty Things "Deadwood" Waterloo To Anywhere
Dead Kennedys "Let's Lynch the Landlord" Dead Kennedys
Descendents "Nothing With You" Cool To Be You
Devo "Uncontrollable Urge" Q. Are We Not Men? A. We Are DEVO!
Dag Nasty "Bottle This" Minority of One
Def Leppard "Me & My Wine" High 'n' Dry
Decemberists, The "Billy Liar" Her Majesty
Death Cab For Cutie "The Sound of Settling" Transatlanticism
Dinosaur Jr. "Just Like Heaven" Duck And Cover
Dismemberment Plan "Superpowers" Change
Daft Punk "Digital Love" Discovery
Dada "Dizz Knee Land" Puzzle
Dispatch "Outloud" Bang Bang
Destroyer "Your Blood" Destroyer's Rubies

....and then the girl who did the show after me couldn't do her show. I was tempted to go through the rest of the Ds as one big 2 1/2 hour extravaganza, but then I cut myself too short on time to go through any more CDs from my own collection to check songs for naughty words and that sort of thing. So instead? Another hour of new releases! Score!

Rockford Mules "Ain't My Home" Crooked Tooth
Albert Hammond Jr. "Call an Ambulance" Yours To Keep
The Shins "Girl Sailor" Wincing the Night Away
The Apples in Stereo "Same Old Drag" New Magnetic Wonder
The Bird and the Bee "Again & Again" The Bird and the Bee
Deerhoof "Believe E.S.P." FU:EL will be back once again on Tuesday nights, filling the St. Louis airwaves (and the vast interweb) with the best indie rock and power pop I can get my grubby little hands on! KWUR will be airing a news program from 6-6:30, so we'll now be running FU:EL in efficient 90 minute bursts, split up into this brand new framework....

6:30-7pm -- FU:EL classic: The FU:EL you know and love, with a smattering of brand new releases and some classic power pop favorites, the same kind of killer mix we've been supplying for five years running!

7-8pm -- FU:EL Alphabet Soup: I'll be trying something a little crazy this year, and each week I'll be spotlighting artists from one letter of the alphabet, which means until I get through all 26 letters, this portion of the show will be 100% new every week!

This week is the letter "A", naturally, which means we'll be mixing FU:EL regulars like Apples in Stereo and Alkaline Trio, the hottest new indie rockers like Arctic Monkeys and the Arcade Fire, and bands that just flat out need to be played....AC/DC anyone? If there are any "A" artists you want to hear, drop me a comment before this Tuesday, then be sure to tune in or check here Wednesday for the downloadable version.

8/8/6

Download the first half
Download the second half

Tom Verlaine "Orbit" Songs and Other Things
Calexico "Bisbee Blue" Garden Ruin
Sufjan Stevens "Carlyle Lake" The Avalanche
Belle & Sebastian "Song For Sunshine" The Life Pursuit
Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos "Dress Me Like a Clown" The dust of retreat
Death Cab For Cutie "The Sound of Settling" Transatlaticism
Jimmy Eat World "Game of Pricks" Live at La Scala
Hey Mercedes "The Slightest Idea" Every Night Fireworks
slapDASH "News At Five" slapDASH
Pearl Jam "Army Reserve" Pearl Jam
The Cure "The End of the World" The Cure
The Shins "So Says I" So Says I (single)
Elf Power "All the World Is Waiting" Back to the Web
The Flaming Lips "Waitin' For a Superman" The Soft Bulletin
Explosions in the Sky "Look Into the Air" How Strange, Innocence
The Starlight Mints "Inside of Me" Drowaton
The Walkmen "This Job Is Killing Me" A Hundred Miles Off
Butch Walker "Too Famous To Get Fully Dressed" The Rise and Fall of Butch Walker and the Let's-Go-Out-Tonites!
Wolfmother "Dimension" Wolfmother
Arctic Monkeys "Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But..." I'm going to have to cancel on account of the surprise onset of a summer cold (easily the most obonoxious sort of temporary illness). It's a shame, too, as I've got all kinds of great new music for you FU:ELers out there, including the brand new disc from BLOWOFF, the brand new project from Sugar/Husker Du frontman Bob Mould and house DJ Richard Morel. Nope, even on the evilest day of the century, File Under: Easy Listening can't help but bring you some of the best power pop that music has to offer! My special guest this week was Mr. Mark Bruder, who picked out a rather sizeable chunk of the music on the show this week, including plenty of bands being played on FU:EL for the first time. But hey, we like to stir things up, right? It may be cold as the dickens outside, but it's technically the "spring" semester, meaning a new schedule at the radio station. This time around, you can still find FU:EL in an abbreviated 1-hour edition, currently scheduled from 7-8pm every Monday night. Normally, I'd be one to gripe about being cut short, but honestly, most of the time I'm struggling to fill that last half hour anyway. This'll force me to consolidate and, hopefully, have more kick-ass shows.

But the break over the holidays helped me reinvigorate the show, as you can see from the absolutely KILLER setlist from the show tonight, January 30th. It derailed a bit in the middle, but the beginning and end....Gold! There isn't much, but it's all that I want from you"

No, don't worry, I didn't forget about you wonderful people! It's just that computer problems at the station have prevented me from posting the setlists from the last two weeks.

The comp was down entirely for Cory Hoehn's visit into the station. It was a much different edition of FU:EL, a lot dancier than usual. I sat aside and let Cory sling tracks for most of the show, as he had prepared a setlist in advance of his favorite tracks from 2005 (for a compilation he's sending out along with his Xmas cards...a great idea).

By the time local music guru J. Church arrived, they had completely changed the comp around, and it was now running Mozilla on a Linux OS instead of Internet Explorer on a Windows OS. I have severe loathing for Mozilla, and have never used Linux before, so I couldn't even reason out how to do something as simple as cutting and pasting the setlist onto this here website. I'm sorry, but if you can't cut and paste text in your program, you've made a shitty program.

Regular programming ends on KWUR this Sunday, but that doesn't mean there won't be a show Monday night! PLAYBACKer Kaylen Hoffman will be coming back for a second dose this coming Monday, and after that I'll likely be running solo over break. Tune in this Monday, normal bat-time, normal bat-channel, won't you?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://kwur-fuel.blogspot.com/2005/12/why-cant-you-save-time-for-me-there.html' title='"Why can't you save time for me? Don't get too used to it, though, because the guest stars come back fast and furious starting on the 28th with PLAYBACKer Cory Hoehn. I wonder...is his name pronounced "Hane"? That's how *I*'ve been pronouncing it, and that'd be cool if I'm right. Cuz then his name would sound like Corey Haim. My special guest this week was Kaylen Hoffman, and this week's episode was, far and away, the closest to what an old school Jason-and-Brad edition of FU:EL would sound like. What can I say? The lady's got some damn fine taste. This one is probably about half me and half her, but I would just like to state my wholehearted approval of every song played this week. Thanks to them for stopping by, and for having such good taste! PLAYBACK:stl editors-in-chief Laura Hamlett and Jim Dunn co-hosted the show with me and played a plethora of great music. Unfortunately, posting the playlist slipped my mind at the time, so you'll have to wait a bit to see it (my apologies), but trust me....'twas a good 'un.

Tonight's episode of FU:EL is a no-go, as I will be out in Columbia, MO, screaming my head off at the three nice boys from Guster. Don't worry, though....File Under:EasyListening will return on November 7th with my special guest co-host Kaylen Hoffman, also of Playback. Kaylen maintains after looking over a few playlists here that she and I have near identical taste. This can only bode well for you, dear listener.

Show of the week this week would be Guster, obviously, with a spoken word performance by Henry Rollins at the Pageant a close second. The theme of the week (not that most week's have themes, but this one did) was bands from the British Isles, i.e. England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. (How little my Irish countrymen appreciate being lumped in with Britain geographically is another matter entirely...) Be that as it may, we played all kinds of great British and Irish bands, which I think featured a pretty nice blend of the mainstream (U2, The Cure, Rolling Stones) and the not-so-mainstream (Supergrass, Gomez, the Beta Band).

Anyone who looks at the setlist and gets confused, a couple notes...
- BRMC isn't "technically" a British band, as 2/3 of the band is from San Francisco. But drummer Nick Jago is British. Also, the Little Barrie song Mary Beth picked out put me in the mood to hear the new BRMC which, oddly enough, has already disappeared from the new release stacks. Rats....

- The love for Britain wrapped up after the Rolling Stones, since I needed to get some new releases on the air. We had a few British new releases (Franz Ferdinand, for example), but not enough to fulfill the 6 NR's I needed to play.

- I'm personally a big fan of the way we wrapped the show: with one great British band (Leatherface) covering another great British band (The Police). Good stuff!

And don't forget to tune in next week, when Jim Campbell will rock yer effin' face off!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

U2 “I Will Follow” Boy
Stereophonics “A Thousand Trees” Word Gets Around
Supergrass “Pumping On Your Stereo” Supergrass
The Clash “Lost in the Supermarket” London Calling
Gang of Four “Sweet Jane (live)” Entertainment! Be there, won't you?

Special announcement, btw: this happened back in February and I'm a little late finding it, but so what? Now-defunct St. Louis rockers Stir have put their entire un-released final album up for download on their website, www.stirband.com. I always thought Stir got the short end of the stick (their 2nd record, "Holy Dogs", has at least five great songs on it), so it's nice to at least be able to hear this stuff. Also, see if you can find the mp3 of them doing "Crazy Train"....definitely worth the hunt.

"This fire is outta control, we're gonna burn this city, BURN this city"

Hey all, be sure to tune in to the show on Monday, September 26th, where my guest once again will be Lauren Beckerle of PlaybackSTL. Welcome to the website for "File Under: Easy Listening", the long-running, much-loved (or at least, I like to think so) power pop radio show! FU:EL airs Monday nights from 6-8pm on KWUR-FM (90.3 FM in St. Louis, MO) and is also available online at www.kwur.com.

Many long-time listeners of the show will remember the days when I had a co-host, one Brad Terebelo. Well, Brad has gone to Philadelphia, but I've gotten ever-so-lonely in the studio of late, so get ready for a plethora of co-hosts. I'm using my connections at local magazine PlaybackSTL to bring some of the brightest local music journalists onto the St. Louis airwaves. Tune in next Monday, September 12th, for the first show of the semester, where I'll be joined by Playback music reviewer Lauren Beckerle.

Be sure to stay tuned to this very site for setlists, concert announcements, and other show updates.
