Another week, another radio show, and if I may say so myself, a fantastic one. It tooka little bit to fall into a groove in the new release stuff, but the back half of that and the entire alphabetical show was fantastic. On that end, I slipped in (International) Noise Conspiracy, which I missed last week, then slipped in a punk set, a low key set, and a noise set, all of which flow great and fit well together. This radio show marks some kind of weird record: this is the first time I went into the show picking EXACTLY how many CDs I needed to do the show. Download the new release show here. It's a little short this week, due to me showing up late to the studio. It's kind of a weird conglomeration of stuff, particularly that Kings of Leon song. They played "Charmer" when they played Pop's last year and it had the same weird yelping stuff on it. Don't know how I forgot this point, but it certainly surprised me when I started playing it. That Waking Ashland CD is pretty good....kind of like Ben Folds without the snarky sense of humor.

Download the E show, part 1. I wasn't sure if I'd split the E's in half or not, but I decided I'd go for it in order to play some bands I probably wouldn't ever play otherwise. Turned out to be a VERY good decision. The songs by Eames Era (who I had never heard before) and Eisley fit very well into the set, and I got to get a little crazy by slipping in "Gay Bar." Everyone should download this set if for no other reason than Electronic's downright AMAZING song "For You" (Electronic features Bernard Sumner, the singer of New Order, and Johnny Marr, the guitar player of the Smiths, so obviously you should like it or you have no taste). I was tempted to play a couple more ELO songs ("So Fine" and "Evil Woman," for those who were wondering) but decided to give some new bands (Ela, the Eaves) a try. Glad I did.

I'm halfway tempted to expand all but the most paltry letters (Q, X, Y, Z) into 2 hours' worth of shows just so that I expand outside of my own CD collection as much as possible. 19 D songs this week, 6 of which came from outside of my collection. A new semester, a new FU:EL

The new school year is in full swing, and that means a brand new File Under: Easy Listening! FU:EL will be back once again on Tuesday nights, filling the St. Louis airwaves (and the vast interweb) with the best indie rock and power pop I can get my grubby little hands on! KWUR will be airing a news program from 6-6:30, so we'll now be running FU:EL in efficient 90 minute bursts, split up into this brand new framework....

6:30-7pm -- FU:EL classic: The FU:EL you know and love, with a smattering of brand new releases and some classic power pop favorites, the same kind of killer mix we've been supplying for five years running!

7-8pm -- FU:EL Alphabet Soup: I'll be trying something a little crazy this year, and each week I'll be spotlighting artists from one letter of the alphabet, which means until I get through all 26 letters, this portion of the show will be 100% new every week!

This week is the letter "A", naturally, which means we'll be mixing FU:EL regulars like Apples in Stereo and Alkaline Trio, the hottest new indie rockers like Arctic Monkeys and the Arcade Fire, and bands that just flat out need to be played....AC/DC anyone? ...just kidding. Nope, even on the evilest day of the century, File Under: Easy Listening can't help but bring you some of the best power pop that music has to offer! My special guest this week was Mr. Mark Bruder, who picked out a rather sizeable chunk of the music on the show this week, including plenty of bands being played on FU:EL for the first time. But hey, we like to stir things up, right? There's also a veritable ass-ton of music from bands in the Elephant 6 collective (Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal, Elf Power, Essex Green, etc.), so the trip-sixes make sense, don't they?

Last week, FU:EL terrorized the airwaves on TUESDAY instead of Monday, and we'll be doing so again! Feel free to tune in from 7-8 tonight, but instead you'll be hearing the soulful sounds of "Dividing by Zero Will Get You Nowhere" featuring the inimitable Jeff York. I will be taking over Jeff's Tuesday night timeslot from 8-10pm, just like I did last week.

Speaking of last week, it was Valentine's Day (my gf was out of town, don't worry....I'm not in any trouble) so we had a special theme show of songs about love. Hey, everyone, and welcome back! It may be cold as the dickens outside, but it's technically the "spring" semester, meaning a new schedule at the radio station. This time around, you can still find FU:EL in an abbreviated 1-hour edition, currently scheduled from 7-8pm every Monday night. Normally, I'd be one to gripe about being cut short, but honestly, most of the time I'm struggling to fill that last half hour anyway. This'll force me to consolidate and, hopefully, have more kick-ass shows.

No, don't worry, I didn't forget about you wonderful people! It's just that computer problems at the station have prevented me from posting the setlists from the last two weeks.

The comp was down entirely for Cory Hoehn's visit into the station. It was a much different edition of FU:EL, a lot dancier than usual. I sat aside and let Cory sling tracks for most of the show, as he had prepared a setlist in advance of his favorite tracks from 2005 (for a compilation he's sending out along with his Xmas cards...a great idea).

By the time local music guru J. Church arrived, they had completely changed the comp around, and it was now running Mozilla on a Linux OS instead of Internet Explorer on a Windows OS. I have severe loathing for Mozilla, and have never used Linux before, so I couldn't even reason out how to do something as simple as cutting and pasting the setlist onto this here website. I'm sorry, but if you can't cut and paste text in your program, you've made a shitty program.

Regular programming ends on KWUR this Sunday, but that doesn't mean there won't be a show Monday night! PLAYBACKer Kaylen Hoffman will be coming back for a second dose this coming Monday, and after that I'll likely be running solo over break. Tune in this Monday, normal bat-time, normal bat-channel, won't you?

Another week, another setlist. This time, I was joined by PLAYBACK:stl theatre editor and fellow Bellevillian Tyson Blanquart for yet another phenomenal show, setlist below. Be sure to tune in next week, when my special guest will be....NO ONE! That's right, no one signed up for this week, so I'll be taking a week to enjoy the thrill of solo radio once again. Don't get too used to it, though, because the guest stars come back fast and furious starting on the 28th with PLAYBACKer Cory Hoehn. I wonder...is his name pronounced "Hane"? Aaaaaand catching up, here's the setlist for yesterday's show. My special guest this week was Kaylen Hoffman, and this week's episode was, far and away, the closest to what an old school Jason-and-Brad edition of FU:EL would sound like. What can I say? The lady's got some damn fine taste. This one is probably about half me and half her, but I would just like to state my wholehearted approval of every song played this week. Especially the ELO one. If you missed last week's show, you missed out on a treat! PLAYBACK:stl editors-in-chief Laura Hamlett and Jim Dunn co-hosted the show with me and played a plethora of great music. Unfortunately, posting the playlist slipped my mind at the time, so you'll have to wait a bit to see it (my apologies), but trust me....'twas a good 'un.

Tonight's episode of FU:EL is a no-go, as I will be out in Columbia, MO, screaming my head off at the three nice boys from Guster. Don't worry, though....File Under:EasyListening will return on November 7th with my special guest co-host Kaylen Hoffman, also of Playback. Kaylen maintains after looking over a few playlists here that she and I have near identical taste. This can only bode well for you, dear listener.

Show of the week this week would be Guster, obviously, with a spoken word performance by Henry Rollins at the Pageant a close second. See you at one or the other!

This week's guest on FU:EL was PlaybackSTL's own music reviewer Mary Beth Hascall. The theme of the week (not that most week's have themes, but this one did) was bands from the British Isles, i.e. England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. (How little my Irish countrymen appreciate being lumped in with Britain geographically is another matter entirely...) Be that as it may, we played all kinds of great British and Irish bands, which I think featured a pretty nice blend of the mainstream (U2, The Cure, Rolling Stones) and the not-so-mainstream (Supergrass, Gomez, the Beta Band).

Anyone who looks at the setlist and gets confused, a couple notes...
- BRMC isn't "technically" a British band, as 2/3 of the band is from San Francisco. But drummer Nick Jago is British. Also, the Little Barrie song Mary Beth picked out put me in the mood to hear the new BRMC which, oddly enough, has already disappeared from the new release stacks. Rats....

- The love for Britain wrapped up after the Rolling Stones, since I needed to get some new releases on the air. We had a few British new releases (Franz Ferdinand, for example), but not enough to fulfill the 6 NR's I needed to play.

- I'm personally a big fan of the way we wrapped the show: with one great British band (Leatherface) covering another great British band (The Police). Good stuff!

What I will very definitely have, however, is a smattering of Bob Mould tracks to get you excited for his show at Mississippi Nights tomorrow (the show of the week, without a doubt), plus a smattering of tracks from the New Pornographers, who'll be in town on October 6th. Be there, won't you?

Special announcement, btw: this happened back in February and I'm a little late finding it, but so what? Now-defunct St. Louis rockers Stir have put their entire un-released final album up for download on their website, www.stirband.com. I always thought Stir got the short end of the stick (their 2nd record, "Holy Dogs", has at least five great songs on it), so it's nice to at least be able to hear this stuff. Also, see if you can find the mp3 of them doing "Crazy Train"....definitely worth the hunt.

As I reiterated several times during the show, there's a number of great concerts to check out this week, including FOUR on Thursday alone: Alkaline Trio at the Pageant, Tristan Prettyman at the Gargoyle, Dressy Bessy at the Way Out Club, and Sufjan Stevens at Mississippi Nights. Hey all! Welcome to the website for "File Under: Easy Listening", the long-running, much-loved (or at least, I like to think so) power pop radio show! FU:EL airs Monday nights from 6-8pm on KWUR-FM (90.3 FM in St. Louis, MO) and is also available online at www.kwur.com.

Many long-time listeners of the show will remember the days when I had a co-host, one Brad Terebelo. Well, Brad has gone to Philadelphia, but I've gotten ever-so-lonely in the studio of late, so get ready for a plethora of co-hosts. I'm using my connections at local magazine PlaybackSTL to bring some of the brightest local music journalists onto the St. Louis airwaves. Tune in next Monday, September 12th, for the first show of the semester, where I'll be joined by Playback music reviewer Lauren Beckerle.
