"She comes running down like water/ To splash around with the ones that taught her"

If you missed last week's show, you missed out on a treat! PLAYBACK:stl editors-in-chief Laura Hamlett and Jim Dunn co-hosted the show with me and played a plethora of great music. Unfortunately, posting the playlist slipped my mind at the time, so you'll have to wait a bit to see it (my apologies), but trust me....'twas a good 'un.

Tonight's episode of FU:EL is a no-go, as I will be out in Columbia, MO, screaming my head off at the three nice boys from Guster. Don't worry, though....File Under:EasyListening will return on November 7th with my special guest co-host Kaylen Hoffman, also of Playback. Kaylen maintains after looking over a few playlists here that she and I have near identical taste. This can only bode well for you, dear listener.

Show of the week this week would be Guster, obviously, with a spoken word performance by Henry Rollins at the Pageant a close second. See you at one or the other!

"Old poets studied rules of verse and those ladies, they rolled their eyes": Setlist 10/10/05

This week's guest on FU:EL was PlaybackSTL's own music reviewer Mary Beth Hascall. The theme of the week (not that most week's have themes, but this one did) was bands from the British Isles, i.e. England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. (How little my Irish countrymen appreciate being lumped in with Britain geographically is another matter entirely...) Be that as it may, we played all kinds of great British and Irish bands, which I think featured a pretty nice blend of the mainstream (U2, The Cure, Rolling Stones) and the not-so-mainstream (Supergrass, Gomez, the Beta Band).

Anyone who looks at the setlist and gets confused, a couple notes...
- BRMC isn't "technically" a British band, as 2/3 of the band is from San Francisco. But drummer Nick Jago is British. Also, the Little Barrie song Mary Beth picked out put me in the mood to hear the new BRMC which, oddly enough, has already disappeared from the new release stacks. Rats....

- The love for Britain wrapped up after the Rolling Stones, since I needed to get some new releases on the air. We had a few British new releases (Franz Ferdinand, for example), but not enough to fulfill the 6 NR's I needed to play.

- I'm personally a big fan of the way we wrapped the show: with one great British band (Leatherface) covering another great British band (The Police). Good stuff!

And don't forget to tune in next week, when Jim Campbell will rock yer effin' face off!

"Listening too long to one song, sing me Spanish Techno"

Tune in to FU:EL next Monday, when my special guest will be PlaybackSTL's own Mary Beth Hascall. Mary Beth informed me at this week's Doves concert (which was alright, but sandwiched as it was between concerts by Franz Ferdinand, Bob Mould, and the New Pornographers, suffers by comparison) that she is totally stoked for this show, so it should be a good time.

The following week, my co-host will be PlaybackSTL's Jim Campbell. He promises to bring 30 Seconds To Mars. Tune in and get your Jordan Catalano on.

Hopeless case of a kid in denial: setlist 10/03/2005

Here's the setlist from Monday, 10/03, featuring special guest host Kevin Renick (of PlaybackSTL, natch). Kevin is an afficionado of any and all music from the Great White North of Scandinavia, which means that plenty of the stuff he brought along with him has, in all likelihood, NEVER been played on US radio before. Impressive, no?

See how many bands you recognize. Then assume I picked those.

It was a harrowing week this week, especially when the fire alarm started going off in the building about an hour in. Pretty crazy. Good setlist though, full of music that's new to me, and probably to you, too.

"This just in, where to begin? Grin and bear it, it's bare and grim"

Another Monday, another show! Tune in tonight (Oct. 3rd) for another fine edition of FU:EL featuring co-host and PlaybackSTL writer Kevin Renick. Kevin's "Norse Code" is invaluable to anyone who wants to hear all things Scandinavian. He'll be bringing some Scandi stuff, to be sure, but also a smattering of other fine, super-rare recordings. And of course, I'll be pimping the many great shows coming through town this week, including Doves (Oct. 4th - Pageant), the New Pornographers (Oct. 6th - Mississippi Nights), and Sleater-Kinney (Oct. 8th - Mississippi Nights).

Tune in, won't you? www.kwur.com or 90.3 FM tonight, 6-8 pm, and be sure to check back for tonight's playlist!
